Bursary Description

The Oppenheimer Memorial Trust (OMT) bursary is a prestigious postgraduate funding programme supporting exceptional students pursuing advanced studies in research, academia, and development-related fields.

About the OMT Bursary

The Oppenheimer Memorial Trust awards a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate study at Master’s, Doctoral, and Postdoctoral level.

The programme is aimed at developing individuals who demonstrate academic excellence and strong research potential, with the intention of contributing to academia, research, and development in South Africa.

Funding is competitive and awarded at the discretion of the Trust.

The bursary will run for two academic cycles. Graduates intending to study from July 2026 - December 2026, applications commence in January 2026 and close on the 31st of March 2026. While students studying from Janaury 2027 - June 2027, must appy before the 31st of August 2026 as applications open on June 1st 2026. 

Fields Covered

The bursary supports studies in most academic disciplines, except:

  • MBA programmes
  • DBA programmes
  • Narrow commercial-focused qualifications

Application Process

Application must be made through the application portal only. Emailed or incomplete applictaions won't be accepted. Ensure you apply through the online portal as stipulated.

Requirements & Eligibility

Requirements for the various academic disciplines are as follows:

Master’s & Doctoral Applicants:

  • Must be a South African citizen or permanent resident
  • Must be studying towards a Master’s or PhD qualification
  • Must study at a recognised local or international institution
  • Must have a strong academic record
  • Must intend to pursue a career in academia, research, or development

Postdoctoral Applicants:

  • Open to South African, permanent residents, and international applicants
  • Must be pursuing postdoctoral research
  • Must demonstrate strong academic credentials

International Study:

Applicants must demonstrate that:

  • The programme is not readily available in South Africa, OR
  • International study will significantly advance their research and field

Required Documentation

Each application must be accompanied the following documents for consideration:

  • Certified copy of ID / passport / residence permit
  • Academic transcripts and degree certificates
  • Proof of registration or acceptance
  • A detailed study or research proposal
  • A budget breakdown (tuition, living, research costs)
  • A motivation letter (max 500 words)
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) (max 3–4 pages)
  • Proof of financial need / income
  • Letters of recommendation (submitted by referee
