Bursary Description
The SAIIPL bursary supports students pursuing careers in Intellectual Property (IP) law, helping develop future legal professionals in specialised areas such as trademarks, patents, and copyright law.
Four bursaries will be issued to successful applicants valid at R70,000 each for the current academic year. There's 2 trade marks and 2 Patent bursaries available.
About the SAIIPl Bursary Initiative
The South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law (SAIIPL) bursary programme is designed to support law students with a strong interest in Intellectual Property (IP). The programme aims to strengthen South Africa’s IP sector by funding academically capable students who demonstrate both financial need and a clear commitment to IP law.

The bursaries offered by the professional institute are targeted at LLB and LLM students who have a strong interest in Intellectual Property (IP) Law.
Application Process
Students matching the requirements can send their application via email to Ms Michelle Macguire at SAIIPL via this email address. If you do not hear from SAIIPl by 31 July 2026, it means your application has not been successful.
Requirements & Eligibility
Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:
- Be a South African citizen or permanent resident
- Be eligible to be admitted as an attorney in South Africa, as defined under the Legal Practice Act (Act No. 28 of 2014)
- Be between 18 and 30 years old
- Be currently enrolled at a recognised South African university
- Be studying towards an LLB or LLM degree
- Have completed at least one World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) course (e.g. DL001) and provide proof
- Demonstrate a strong interest in Intellectual Property Law
- Show academic potential and financial need

Required Documentation
- A motivation letter (max 500 words) clearly outlining:
- Your interest in Intellectual Property Law
- Whether you are applying for the Trade Mark or Patent bursary
- Your career aspirations within the IP field
- If applying for the Patent bursary:
- A copy of your relevant qualification that allows you to enrol for the Patent Examination Regulations (2003)
- A certified copy of your South African ID or passport
- Proof of residence
- Supporting documents demonstrating financial need
- Certified academic transcripts for all years of study
- A Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Proof of registration for the current or upcoming academic year
