About the CoE Human Development Bursary

The CoE HUMAN development bursary supports postgraduate students in human development research.

The eligible postgraduate students should be registered at South African universities, particularly those aligned with the CoE-HUMAN research network

Funding is awarded based on Full Cost of Study (FCS) or Partial Cost of Study (PCS). The programme focuses on impactful research aligned with key human development themes.

About DSI-NRF

The DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Human Development (CoE-HUMAN) drives research on human development across South Africa. It supports interdisciplinary studies that explore growth, society, and environmental impact.

 The centre operates under national research and innovation priorities. It also promotes equitable access to postgraduate funding.

Fields Covered by the CoE Bursary

Funding is awarded for research aligned with CoE-HUMAN themes. These include life-course development, intergenerational development, and socioecological development.

Proposals may overlap across these thematic areas. All research must focus on human development.

The deadline for submission is 22 April 2026. If you want to apply for the bursary,  applications can be made by completing the designated application form .

Requirements & Eligibility

Requirements for CoE Human Development Scholarship

Interested applicants must apply for Masters or Doctoral studies for the 2027 intake. The bursary mainly targets South African citizens and permanent residents.

A limited number of SADC, African, and international students may be considered. Applicants must meet the age limits of 30 (Masters) and 32 (Doctoral) in the year of application.

To apply, you must submit proof of registration and certified ID or passport copies. Academic transcripts, qualifications, and a detailed research proposal are required.

Additionally, a supervisor recommendation and letter of support must also be included. Only complete applications with all required documents will be considered.
