Bursary Description

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program (FFSP) invites South African graduates to apply for fully funded postgraduate study and research opportunities in the United States for the 2027–2028 academic year. This prestigious programme is supported by the U.S. Embassy in South Africa and provides funding and support for Master’s, PhD, or non-degree research study at top U.S. universities.

The FFSP is designed to strengthen academic and cultural exchange between countries, and selected candidates receive comprehensive support throughout their studies.

What the Fulbright Foreign Student Program for South Africans Offers

Successful FFSP applicants receive substantial support while studying in the United States. This usually includes:

  • Funding for tuition, books, and academic fees

  • Living allowance to cover costs while abroad

  • Medical insurance

  • Round-trip airfare to the U.S.

  • Visa application fees

  • Settling-in support upon arrival

  • Standardised test vouchers (GRE/TOEFL) for semi-finalists

This level of support makes the Fulbright programme one of the most competitive and valuable postgraduate funding opportunities available to South African students applying to study abroad.

Fields of Study and Exceptions

The Fulbright programme is open to most academic fields, with the exception of:

  • MBA programmes

  • Medical or veterinary-based degrees that require clinical contact

This means candidates in science, engineering, arts, humanities, social sciences, and research fields are encouraged to apply.

Requirements & Eligibility

To be eligible for the FFSP in 2027–2028, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a South African citizen or a permanent resident with at least five years of residency.

  • Not hold dual U.S. citizenship or be resident in the U.S. at the time of application.

  • Have the appropriate academic credentials:

    • For Master’s applications: a four-year bachelor’s degree, BTech, or a three-year bachelor’s degree with an honours year.

    • For PhD applications: a completed master’s degree.

    • For Visiting Student Researcher (non-degree): be registered for a PhD with a South African university.

  • Demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, and a clear study plan.

The programme looks for students who show commitment to returning to South Africa after completing their studies and contributing to local development.
